The Uniqueness of the Name "Thompson"
Its origins are Scottish and English, and there are a variety of meanings ascribed to it (Redmonds, King, & Hey, 2011). There are also some different spellings used. The name simply means "son of Thom" or "son of Thomas" (Redmonds, King, & Hey, 2011) However, it is important to know that Thompson is not the "original" name, and is an English translation. The Anglicized Gaelic name is MacTavish, which was itself translated from MacTamhais (Redmonds, King, & Hey, 2011). There is another potential origin, which is that the name came from a placename of Thompson (Redmonds, King, & Hey, 2011). In other words, people who came from that place ended up with that as a last name. There is no proof of either origin of the name, as it renames somewhat of a mystery. This is not surprising, since many names have questionable origins that are unable to be confirmed at this point in history.
